Students in Hamtramck’s public schools are hitting the books hard during this month.
But not necessarily for their classes.
Instead, students are being encouraged to turn off the television and open a book to read for fun, or for whatever reason. The important point is to get the kids to learn to love reading.
Over at Dickinson East Elementary School, kids, dressed in their pajamas, gathered with their parents after school in a sort of sleepover and read books and romped around. They also stood in line to get an autograph from the Detroit Tigers’ mascot, “Paws.”
Later this month the students at Dickinson East will hold a reading carnival and each will receive a free book.
