Expert in Community Walkability to Visit Hamtramck

By Charles Sercombe

Get your walking shoes on.

Dan Burden, a nationally-known expert on making communities more walkable, is hiking into town.

Burden and the City Of Hamtramck are hosting a walk around the city on Thursday, July 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. To join the walk, meet at City Hall.

“He’s the guru in making communities more walkable,” said Jason Friedmann, the Director of the city’s Community & Economic Development Department.

After the walk Burden will hold a talk about his findings inside City Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The city, in turn, will take his recommendations and apply for state and federal grants.

Hamtramck already has won a major grant to make routes to schools in town safer. Work on that project will begin in the next several weeks.

One thing is for sure, there is no shortage of improvements to be made. The city has a lot of broken sidewalks and some sidewalks are dangerously exposed to oncoming traffic. Despite some of the deficiencies, Hamtramck is well-known as being a “walkable” community.
