Fighting crime begins with the help of residents

Hamtramck has always enjoyed a reputation of being a safe city.
But we are smack dab in the middle of Detroit and we do have crime. Lately, there has been a little too much of it in the form of street robberies.
We don’t mean to sound alarmist, but it has gotten to the point where something needs to be done. But before we go on here, we want to stress that we are not faulting anyone or taking a shot at the police department.
Fighting crime is not just the job of our police department. It’s something all of us have to be aware of.
Our police force depends on residents to be their eyes and ears. It’s imperative that if you see something suspicious, by all means report it – immediately.
What we would like to see is a little more community patrolling. Whether it’s cops on bikes or walking the main streets, our officers need to be more visible.
Residents can further help by forming citizen patrols. We do have such a network in place, but we understand it could use more volunteers.
We need to be more than vigilant in our watch for crime. You need to think defensively when walking around town. Be aware of your surroundings and by all means do not – do not – use your cell phone while out and about. There have been almost daily reports of bad guys snatching phones out of the hands of unsuspecting folks.
In some cases, it’s likely just a crime of opportunity performed by someone acting on a sudden urge.
We are all in this together, and we need to watch each other’s backs.
