Housing lawsuit still haunts city and property owners

Will it ever end?
That’s something we imagine a number of residents were thinking recently when it was reported that a housing discrimination lawsuit filed against the city over 40 years ago has yet to be finished.
A few years ago city and state officials were celebrating the end of the lawsuit after it was believed 200 housing units had been built for plaintiffs in the case.
But recently the matter took yet another twist. The attorney for the plaintiffs claimed that the city still needs to build three more houses.
Recently, the federal judge, who has presided over the case since it began and is now retired, agreed.
Worse yet, he has ordered that property owners will have to pay the $600,000 it will take to build the housing units. That court-ordered payment is scheduled to go on the winter property tax bills.
As of now it is not known what that will end up costing the average homeowner.
We find this ruling unbelievable. The federal judge in this matter, Damon Keith, has let this case linger for too long.
We also found it laughable that the judge, as reported by other media sources, has grown tired of the case and might consider having another judge take over the matter.
To that we say, please do it judge. Do the city and taxpayers a huge favor and let a fresh set of eyes review this case.
Hamtramck property owners have been soaked long enough. It is time to let this lawsuit come to a final end.
