Summer vacation is over, kids.
This coming Tuesday, Sept. 7, is the first day of school for Hamtramck Public School District students.
In-person classroom learning has returned, and that will require students and staff to mask up — whether you have a vaccination or not.
Those who are 12 years and older can currently receive vaccinations. It is expected that vaccinations for younger students will be available later this year.
Masking up is not only a district rule, but it is also being required by Wayne County and is being urged by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The return to school coincides with the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is infecting younger people, and which is the reason for another surge of new Covid cases, in the state and nationally.
About 98 percent of new COVID-19 cases are among the unvaccinated, according to health officials.
There has been no word on whether the state will once again shut down in-person learning if the spread of Covid becomes worse.
Hamtramck students can still have the option to stay home and learn online, but parents will be required to make a commitment to making sure their student is actively engaged at home with their lessons.
That appeared to be a problem last year when the Covid pandemic shut down classroom learning.
