School millage renewal is a painless way to support district

The good news about next Tuesday’s school millage renewal election is that if it’s passed, most residents and homeowners don’t have to pay it.
Yes, you read that right, this is a tax homeowners do not pay now nor will they if the millage is renewed.
So who does pay this tax?
It’s those folks who own commercial and rental properties.
While that is a small number of people, the tax revenue is quite substantial. Public Schools Superintendent Tom Niczay said the tax produces almost $2 million a year.
That’s a huge chunk of change for the district.
Our school district is the bedrock of this community, and in many respects it’s a major player in keeping our housing values up. A solid school district creates a stable community, and a stable community is one that attracts families.
While many communities have suffered a great deal in the recent economic downturn, Hamtramck has held its own.
For many voters, the election on Tuesday, Feb. 24, has been under the radar. That’s why it is so important that voters make it a point to come out and vote. We know the cold weather will keep many at home, but think of supporting the millage as a way to ensure your home value remains high.
We urge voters to vote YES on the millage renewal, and remember, it’s a tax most of us don’t even have to pay.
Support our public schools.
