Volunteers are ready to put a shine on Hamtramck

Hamtramck, you’re looking pretty trashy lately.

Now that the snow has finally gone away, the ugly build-up of litter is exposed. It’s hard enough to keep this town clean since enough people think it’s perfectly normal to throw litter onto the ground and streets.

Fortunately, there is a small army of concerned residents, city officials and employees with the state of Michigan’s transportation and housing departments who are joining forces to combat this urban plague.

This Saturday, volunteers will meet at Peoples Community Service Center (8625 Jos. Campau) at 9 a.m., receive work assignments and head out into the city and begin picking up trash.

Everyone is welcomed to join at any time during the day, and if you can’t make it, city officials are asking residents to at least clean up around their homes.

To get things in motion the city cleaned up some lots last week and Wayne County sent out street sweepers along Conant.

The regular street sweeping program will also soon start.
