The newly-formed Hamtramck Walkers Alliance wants to get residents healthy and interacting this spring with a series of town hall-style walks that feature local officials and celebrities.
The one-to-two mile walks will run weekly on Thursday nights beginning at 6 p.m. April 16 and ending on May 21. The walks step off from Zussman Park in front of City Hall and wind their way through the streets of Hamtramck.
The exception will be the May 7 walk led by historian Greg Kowalski, which will begin at the Hamtramck History Museum on Jos. Campau.
Also on board as “Walking Champions” for the spring schedule are Mayor Karen Majewski, Community & Economic Development Director Kathy Angerer, Councilman Anam Miah, and a representative of the Detroit City Football Club.
The season finale features Hamtramck musician and business owner Richie Wohlfeil and the event will end with a neighborhood jam session.
The Walking Champions will be on hand to answer questions and share information about the city in their areas of expertise.
If the walks are successful, the group plans to expand the program in the hope that the events will springboard into additional events and healthy activities for Hamtramck residents.
