What started out as a traffic stop last Thursday afternoon for Hamtramck police officers turned into a high-speed chase that resulted in the death of a father and adult son, as well as numerous injuries to others.
According to the Hamtramck Police Department, a driver was pulled over on Conant near Harold, a situation which quickly escalated into officers being assaulted by the female driver and a female passenger.
The driver parked at a pump at a gas station after being signaled to pull over. The women who allegedly assaulted officers never got out of their vehicle, but resisted attempts by officers to get them out.
The two women then managed to speed away, along with another female passenger, who was pregnant, in the backseat who had nothing to do with the assaults.
The driver then sped down Conant, going north, and then rammed a car head-on that was stopped at a light at McNichols, near Buddy’s Pizzeria. A Bengali father, MD Nur Miah, 73, of Warren and his grown son, MD Sujon Miah, 37, of Sterling Heights, were inside the vehicle that was first struck.
The father died right after the crash, but the son remained alive for a few days before succumbing to his injuries.
The suspect also smashed into four other vehicles, causing heavy damage and numerous injuries to other drivers and passengers.
The impact also caused the female passenger who was pregnant to ultimately lose her unborn child.
The police department did not release details on the initial reason for pulling over the suspect’s car.
One of the suspects was injured in the smash-up and the other was taken into custody.
The driver, Aaliyah Daz Jhanay Renee Glenn, 23, of Detroit, is now charged with numerous felonies, including two counts of driving while license suspended, revoked or denied – causing death.
Hamtramck police say no officers were involved in the crash. The two officers who were assaulted were treated for injuries and released.
Detroit police and state police are each investigating the matter.
City Manager Max Garbarino told The Review that the Hamtramck officers followed the department’s policy on chasing vehicles.
He also said there’s a chance that there will be more fatalities.
