New business looks to become the ‘Sultan’ of Conant

If taste is king, then the Sultan Al-Kabob rules Hamtramck.

The restaurant, located at 9335 Conant Ave., is one of the latest culinary additions to the city. And appropriately enough, this Yemeni-owned business on “Bangladeshi Avenue” serves some of the best Middle Eastern food around.

After opening last Monday (Nov. 29), the casual dining establishment has been steadily winning over customers. With an assortment of appetizers, soups, salads and dinners all available at a moderate price – including vegetarian entrées and the deliciously bountiful “Sultan Tray” combos – it’s easy to see why they keep coming back.

Inside the completely refinished business you’ll find a clean, welcoming environment and a friendly staff. As the sight of a former diner, the Sultan Al-Kabob retains a quaint café charm in the front of the building while maintaining its own distinct flavor by adding a fresh fruit juice bar to the old countertop eating area.

A big change this time around is that the owners have expanded into the next building over to create a dining area big enough to accommodate even the largest of parties. As an added bonus, they have painted several murals depicting some of Yemen’s greatest places to visit – a little food for thought while you’re eating.

“I think we’re one of the best restaurants in Hamtramck,” says manager Wadie Ali, who has worked at other area businesses. “For the quality and the price, we can’t be beat.”

The Sultan Al-Kabob is located at 9335 Conant (right now the sign says Sultan Café) and is open all week. They offer delivery and can cater to all occasions and can be reached at (313) 875-9999, or sultancafe11@yahoo.com.
