Last Thursday (April 15) was a memorable day for the Hamtramck High girls’ soccer team. For the first time in four years, the lady Cosmos won a game. They beat University Prep 2-1.

Playing at home, Hamtramck controlled the Panthers throughout much of the game. After taking the lead early in the match with a goal by Adna Husic, the Cosmos maintained their advantage by keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field. However, a botched call late in the game led to a Panther’s penalty kick that tied the game.

“The refs made a bad call on a handball,” said Head Coach Lauren Ealba. “Despite a number of handballs throughout the game by the other team, the one call they did make was against us on an unintentional play.”

With the game tied 1-1 and only 10 minutes left to play, the Cosmos continued to play hard and keep the ball out of their end of the field. The ball control paid off and the game ended dramatically when Najda Mujakic scored the winning goal with one minute left in regulation.

The team also played a game Thursday (April 22) but the results were unavailable at press time.
