Councilmember Nayeem Choudhury

Councilmember Nayeem Choudhury’s social media war appears far from over.
This week, Choudhury responded to criticism leveled by former city clerk Rana (Faraj) Allen. In a social media post Choudhury accused Allen of acting “unprofessional and disrespectful,” and is “not a good person.”
Allen, in turn, characterized Choudhury as someone who “plays both sides like it’s a full-time job. Whatever keeps him safe, whatever keeps him liked.”
Allen went further, saying that he was “complaining that my deputy wouldn’t let him ‘help’ residents vote, and calling him rude because he wouldn’t bend the rules for him. Translation: he was mad he couldn’t get away with cheating.’
Allen continued: “He knows damn well I ran a fair, clean election. He said it himself. Just not where it counted. But now suddenly I’m ‘not a good person’? Please. The only thing consistent about him is the switch-up.”
Allen was fired by the city after November’s election, in which 37 uncounted ballots were found the day after the election. There was also a matter of Allen having had a punching bag with a photo of mayoral candidate Muhith Mahmood’s photo attached to it in her office.
Choudhury also called a resident who criticized him on social media as a “fake bitch,” and called a political rival a “douchebag.”
A number of residents called out Choudhury for his foul language.
The Review reached out to Choudhury a few weeks ago for comment on the community blowback over those previous remarks, but he did not respond until Monday.
Here’s what he told The Review, verbatim:
“She (Allen) never gave anyone respect and kind attention except those who she likes. Everyone knows she was a wrong person for that clerk position. at you sir I DO NOT APPRECIATE WITH YOUR WRITING ALL THAT IN NEWS PAPER AND SPAWNING UNNECESSARY WRITING AGAINST A GOOD PERSON REPUTATION. I guess that’s job. I don’t think anyone is a good person who get fired and they sue us for no valid reason. Please don’t keep spinning the for same thing. I don’t have a time for nothing sir: Thank you.”
While Choudhury appeared to want to have the last word on his feud with Allen, the public wasn’t done weighing in on the matter.
Former Hamtramck Councilmember Joe Strzalka said Choudhury needs to show respect to the community.
“So the councilman who calls a female resident a ‘fake bitch’ doesn’t like the comments people make of him? Perhaps if he showed respect he’d get some in return. A good start would be a public apology and showing some humility,” Strzalka said.
The woman who was on the receiving end of Choudhury’s “fake bitch,” comment, Diana Elizabeth, also wasn’t done criticizing Choudhury.
“If you cannot tolerate social media or have the patience to or follow the rules of social media interaction, than you should not hold office or seek a position as a public official like a politician.”
Choudhury’s verbal attacks come at a time when the city council has become increasingly divided.
This is his second term on council.
