It took a sub-committee of city councilmembers months to decide not to renew the city’s contract with a company that operated Hamtramck’s parking meter system.
Months, just think about that.
While that was a popular decision, what wasn’t yet taken into consideration during all those months is how the city will replace the $200,000 a year the meters produced in revenue.
Since the council made this decision several weeks ago, there has been some talk about enforcing how long vehicles can park on Jos. Campau in the business district, but that discussion has largely gone nowhere.
This is not responsible governing, folks.
Not only were these major issues left unattended, the decision was made without input from the city manager, who the council has, bizarrely, placed on paid administrative leave.
Simply put, city councilmembers, who have no experience in running a city, are acting recklessly with no forethought as to the ramifications of their decisions.
Hopefully, this election year will bring a change, and point to a fresh direction for the city.
At least, we remain cautiously hopeful at this point.
