This weekend, the Hamtramck rumor mill was working overtime.
The focus of the chitchat in town was whether there will be charges filed against several people, including four councilmembers, for ballot harvesting in the 2023 election.
Word was that state Attorney General Dana Nessel doesn’t want the case to go forward, even though, after her team interviewed people here and reviewed evidence, she asked for a special prosecutor in the state to take over the matter.
The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office answered that call, and has been continuing its investigation for about a month now. An attorney for the office told The Review on Monday that the investigation is still ongoing.
According to sources, if there are no charges filed this week, the case is closed.
On the other hand … it could be all speculation.
The other chatter centered on whether the original offer from President Trump to Mayor Amer Ghalib to be the next U.S. ambassador to Kuwait was withdrawn.
The possible reasons for this, within the rumors, were all over the place. The Review reached out to Ghalib for comment but, as usual, he did not respond.
However, according to a source, a Detroit News reporter called Ghalib, and the mayor denied the rumor, and said he was in Washington D.C. to prepare for his confirmation hearing with the U.S. Senate.
On Tuesday, Ghalib posted a photo of himself outside the State Department building in D.C. There were over 400 congratulatory responses to this post, most of them in Arabic.
Assuming Ghalib is confirmed, he’ll be leaving for Kuwait. In anticipation of being confirmed, Ghalib did not seek re-election this year.
Ghalib was awarded the nomination by President Trump for his endorsement of Trump in the presidential election of 2024.
