The public backlash is growing against Councilmember Mohammed Hassan.
He is apparently facing a potential recall challenge that is being promoted on social media.
Whoever is behind the social media campaign has not yet submitted ballot language for approval to schedule a recall election, however. Getting a recall’s ballot language approved is more challenging now, since state legislators tightened up the requirements.
Critics say that Hassan bullies other councilmembers, and acts like he is running the city. Hassan is also scheduled for a jury trial on April 13, in Wayne County Circuit Court, on felony charges involving election fraud.
In an email to The Review, an unidentified person representing the group behind the recall effort said they are conducting it now because “we see no hope in anything being done by the courts based on recent rulings and so we decide take the matter to our own hands.”
On the social media page calling for Hassan’s removal from office, the following charges are leveled at him:
Fraud
“Pending felony election fraud charges against Councilman Mohammed Hassan raise serious questions about his suitability to lead our community. We cannot allow this violation of trust to go unchecked.”
Hostility
“A documented history of hostile actions toward residents demonstrates a lack of respect for the very people he represents. This behavior undermines community well-being and engagement.”
Interference
“Interference with official council proceedings disrupts governance and erodes public confidence in our elected officials. It is time to demand better leadership for our community.”
The Review reached out to Hassan for comment but he did not respond.
The person connected with the recall also said this is just the beginning of targeting others on council.
“We’re starting with the elephant in the room to show others that we, the residents, will take you out when you cheat in elections, bully the residents and do nothing for the city.”
On social media, the recall effort appears to have community support.
“Exactly what we were looking for!” said Mohamed Alharbi.
Penny Bowler said she is willing to sign a recall petition: “He is a horrible person and should not have any role in our local government.”
Lawrence Macks was succinct, pleading “Stop the Insanity!”
