Public schools to distribute Chromebooks starting this week

Hamtramck Public Schools Superintendent Jaleelah Ahmed posted this notice on social media about handing out Chromebooks to the families of students so students can continue with their lessons for the remainder of the school year:

Dear Hamtramck Public Schools Families,

We are thinking about you during this challenging time. You are all missed and are in our thoughts. While this is a new experience for all involved, we will continue to do our best to strengthen our partnership.

HPS will loan Chromebooks to the families during the week of April 20th. We are looking forward to a full implementation of the online learning on April 27th. Each school will share communication about their specific plans on their technology distribution plans. At this time, we are seeking to distribute one chromebook to each household. Once we have ensured that all households have one chromebook, we will work with families that request an additional chromebook.

The Chromebooks are for our students, we ask that you take care of them so that our students continue to use them upon returning to school.

Some things to be mindful about:
• A picture ID is required to check out a chromebook. If you do not have any ID, reach out to the school at (313) 912-4502 for further information.
• You are encouraged to wear masks and gloves.
• Only one person per family can pick up the chromebook. We need to work together to minimize the number of people.
• Follow all directions to ensure your safety and others’ safety.
• If you are sick, please do NOT report to your child’s school. You will need to reach out to the school at (313) 912-4502 for further information.
• Please adhere to the social distancing guidelines. I am sure you missed each other and may have a lot to catch up on, however it is critical that you maintain 6 feet apart from one another to maintain social distancing guidelines.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is important that we take every safety precaution.

The Parent Engagement Team and our bilingual teachers have been making phone calls to gather data for a survey to update our records with the contact information, gather information on the needs of our families, and do wellness checks. We are here for you.

In addition to our food distribution sites, we are working with Gleaners, Detroit Friendship House, J & E Community Relief and Zaman. Information is posted on our social media sites and shared with our school. Please reach out and let us know your needs so that we can accommodate you.

Supports will continue to be made for our families for the following:
1. HPS Communication Hotline for students and families.
2. SEL Supports from our social workers, counselors and restorative practice teams.
3. Family and Community supports for our families in need from our Parent Engagement
4. Teams and School and Community Teams.
5. Academic supports by all instructional staff.
