It’s going to be tough to replace City Manager Kathy Angerer.
Yes, we know some folks will scoff at that notion. All leaders have their critics.
But the way we see it, Angerer has been the best city manager Hamtramck has experienced. Under her administration, the city has obtained numerous grants from various agencies and organizations, totaling in the millions.
Angerer has always had her door open to the public for their inquiries, and many have complimented her for her patience. She also attended numerous events, dinners, and get-togethers over the years – often at a sacrifice for her personal life.
Angerer threw herself into the job without hesitation, and always with generosity for others.
That’s the kind of access the public needs, and deserves. As the saying goes, those will be big shoes to fill.
Angerer has been in charge since 2017, and recently she announced her resignation to take another job.
She has said her leaving has nothing to do with Hamtramck, and that a job offer came her way that she couldn’t refuse.
Being a city manager is not an easy job. You have folks constantly second-guessing your every move. In Hamtramck, critics can be particularly viscous, and often hurl slanderous insults via social media.
That has led to Hamtramck having a sour reputation. The political in-fighting has turned off a number of other talented and qualified folks.
We wish Angerer well, and of course, all the luck in the world for her next chapter in life/ We thank her for her service
We hope that Hamtramck can overcome its rough-and-tumble political squabbling and come together on the city’s search for a new city manager.
The city council has taken the right move in seeking a company to search for qualified candidates. We have faith in the process.
In the meantime, we wish Interim City Manager Max Garbarino good luck in oversee the city until a new city manager is hired.

I remember the good old days when Bill Cooper was City Manager.

Hamtramck had a rapid succession of city managers and acting city managers after Bill left – including Erik Tungate, Kyle Tertzag among others.

We need to bring an outsider that will administer the city’s affairs without allowing undue interference by local political interests.

The State of Michigan previously paid $20,000 for a city manager search to replace Katrina Powell. The recommendation of Steve Duchene was rejected by City Council as they instead picked Kathy Angerer. Angerer had previously been an Asst. City Manager under Kyle Tertzag.

While Kathy Angerer has not done a horrible job, Mr. Duchene was clearly the superior choice with his vast years of experience in city management.

Angerer’s previous claim to fame was as the Michigan House Democratic Floor Leader. She had a past working relationship with some of the heavy hitters in Lansing politics – and some saw this as a plus when City Council hired her to replace Katrina Powell.
