After waiting several months, it’s now Mayor Amer Ghalib’s turn to be in the U.S. Senate spotlight.
His hearing for confirmation to become ambassador to Kuwait is this Thursday (Oct. 23) at 10:30 a.m.
President Trump nominated Ghalib in apparent gratitude for Ghalib’s support of his endorsement of Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Ghalib is also credited with influencing a number of fellow Arab and Muslim voters to switch from supporting Democrats to getting behind Trump and the Republican Party.
For many in that community, they were swayed to support Trump because he promised to end both the Ukraine War and the war in Gaza on “day one.”
That campaign promise never came to fruition, but there is a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. However, that ceasefire agreement has already nearly collapsed.
Unlike other nominees, Ghalib’s hearing was held up over concerns about his past comments that were considered anti-semitic, and comments that were interpreted to be in support of Hamas.
Ghalib has denied those interpretations of what he has reportedly said.
He was also criticized for his support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. The city council here, with Ghalib’s approval, passed a resolution to adopt that BDS policy for the city.
The Anti-Defamation League has called for Trump to withdraw Ghalib’s nomination.
One of his critics, though, is far-right conservative Laura Loomer, who has been influential with President Trump, and has urged Trump to withdraw Ghalib’s nomination.
In a social media post, Loomer said: “Amer Ghalib’s ambassadorship should be revoked. We can’t allow Islamification of the West to be supported from within the White House.”
Ghalib says he still has the full support of Trump, and Trump has been able to get most of his nominees approved.
The Review reached out to Ghalib for comment, but he has yet to respond.
