As expected, a community activist accused of sexual assault took a plea deal.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s office agreed to drop a first degree sexual assault charge against Ibrahim Aljahim, 42, in exchange for him pleading guilty to a second degree sexual assault charge involving a mentally disabled person.
The plea deal was requested by the victim’s family, in order to spare the victim from having to keep replaying what happened in court, according to sources.
Second degree sexual assault means there was no sexual penetration.
Aljahim was initially charged with performing a sex act on an 18-year-old male special education student who was attending Oakland International Academy back in 2019.
Aljahim, 42, who is an immigrant from Yemen, initially got a break during a preliminary examination in Hamtramck 31st District Court when Judge Alexis Krot declined to bind the case over to Wayne County Circuit Court because of a lack of evidence, as well as due to contradictory testimony from the student. But, she did also rule that the matter could be taken up again.
When DNA evidence became available, Aljahim was recharged. However, by that time, Aljahim went missing and had moved to Mississippi, where he was apprehended.
According to previous court testimony, it is alleged that Aljahim took the student out of school and then to his car, where the assault took place.
At the time, Aljahim was a Community Liaison Officer at the school, located at Latham and Florian. He is no longer employed by the school.
Although the charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, Aljahim was given probation, 40 hours of community service, and the stipulation that he will also have to register as a sex offender for the next 25 years.
Recently, Aljahim said, on Facebook, that he will run for mayor of Hamtramck if Mayor Amer Ghalib takes a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
After endorsing Trump for president, Ghalib also galvanized local Arab/Muslim support in Hamtramck and in the metro area for the former president’s re-election.
Aljahim is also a supporter of Trump.
