A community activist is once again facing sexual assault charges, and is scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 25 in Wayne County Circuit Court.
This is the second time that Ibrahim Aljahim, who is now in his 40s, is accused of sexually assaulting a special education student at Oakland International Academy back in 2019.
Aljahim has said he is not guilty of the charges.
The student was then 18 years old. The Review does not identify victims of sexual assault.
He beat the first attempt for him to face trial in 2019 because of a lack of evidence, specifically DNA evidence, and testimony by the alleged victim that was deemed contradictory.
But this time, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office says it has the necessary evidence, and Aljahim was bound over for trial by Hamtramck 31st District Court Judge Alexis Krot.
Aljahim, an immigrant from Yemen, was originally recharged in 2022 with first degree sexual assault of a mentally disabled student, but a series of motions and a change of attorneys by Aljahim delayed the matter from going to trial.
The judge in the current case is Bridget Mary Hathaway.
According to the prosecutor’s office, it is alleged that Aljahim forced the student at the school to perform a sex act on him.
According to previous court testimony, it is alleged that Aljahim took the student out of school, and then to his car where the assault took place.
At the time, Aljahim was a Community Liaison Officer at the school, located at Latham and Florian. He is no longer employed by the school. In the meantime, he has remained active politically, and has attended a number of community events, including the recent graduation ceremony for the Hamtramck Police Department’s Youth Academy, and is a regular attendee at city council meetings.
If Aljahim is found guilty, he could face life in prison.
Police arrested him in Mississippi before he was then recharged in 2022 in Michigan. Aljahim has been out, since then, on a $500,000 bond (of which he had to post 10 percent), and is required to wear a tether.
