In Hamtramck, we still welcome immigrants

Last week, this page questioned whether Hamtramck can still be considered a welcoming place.
That was in reference to the mayor and city council supporting a ban displaying a pride flag – and others – on city property.
The backlash in the metro area, state and nation was immediate.
It’s not known what the final impact of this decision will be – and there are people outside the city who fully support the city’s position – but we know one thing: Despite what may be perceived as a step backwards, Hamtramck can, at the same time, extend its hand to newcomers.
Take, for example, the recent picnic and celebration of our immigrant community. That event, held at Veterans Park, was sponsored by the non-profit organization Samaritus.
The good folks at Samaritus were instrumental in relocating immigrants to this country, and specifically here in Hamtramck. The organization also played a key part in securing funding to have new housing units built for the immigrants – most of whom are refugees from war-torn countries.
It’s moments like that where Hamtramck truly shines as a model city.
That is the spirit of giving and accepting that certain city officials need to pay attention to, and learn from.
Be sure of one thing, however: the pride flag issue is far from settled.

Would never set foot in such an ignorant place after what the city council did. That town looks like crap as it is, surely there are more important things the city leaders could focus on instead of being hateful & backwards.
