Now, more than ever, city needs a fresh start

Hamtramck has had a long history of dysfunction city councils.
And now it appears the current council is continuing that tradition of being a clown show.
At this point, there are allegations that four councilmembers, and one former councilman, have violated election law.
It’s furthermore been alleged that two current councilmembers are actually not residents, and could be disqualified from the August Primary Election, as well as be kicked off the council.
Let’s face it, this current council is not unlike previous ones, and anyone trying to tell you that it’s all “Kumbaya” and functional is blowing smoke up your-know-what.
Hamtramck’s elected officials are unraveling before our eyes. Oh yes, there’s a presumption of innocence and all that, but in the court of public opinion: you’re now a joke — and an embarrassment.
And when people start blaming the media for pointing out uncomfortable truths – calling it “fake” or “yellow” journalism — know that it is a smokescreen meant only to distract.
Hamtramck deserves better, and there are qualified people who live here who would like to serve, but who are turned off by antics of past or current elected officials.
Who can blame them?
Hamtramck has never looked more absurd.
And that’s saying a lot.
Thank goodness this is an election year, because it’s clear that we need new people on the council who — without a doubt –live here, have won a seat on the council honestly, and who actually have a stake in the city.
