Hamtramck’s Pope Park needs your help.
Or to be more exact, your dollars.
The Karol Wojtyla Hamtramck Committee now has a website where you can make a donation, called crowdfunding.
The goal is to raise $25,000 by June 1, and once the goal is reached the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will kick in an additional $25,000. That means a total of $50,000 will go toward renovating the park.
There are already plans to spend about $100,000 at the park to make major improvements. Some of those plans include removing the iron gating, improving lighting, installing greenery and new paving.

Pope Park is named in honor of Pope John Paul II, the only Polish pope elected to that position. Karol Wojtyla was his birth name. The monument was installed in 1982. In 1987, Pope John Paul II motorcaded down Jos. Campau and saw the monument.
The park has become a destination spot for visitors. While some repair work has been done to the base of the monument, the park has not had a makeover since it was created.
The city won a state grant that will also be used to make improvements.
