With fresh faces, school board can plot new path

Hamtramck voters have agreed that a new direction is needed on the city’s school board.
And it was the right decision.
The district has had a host of problems in recent years, and there is a need for a fresh perspective.
We congratulate new board members Linda Wolyniec and Mohamed Algaheim. We are confident that this will result in a more unified board, and one that can steer the district out of the division of the last few years.
Hamtramck Public Schools have had a long tradition of offering quality education, and have produced many successful graduates who have gone on to serve the city, state and nation well.
We need a resurgence of pride in our schools.
The first order of business for this new board should be to reset its policies, and make the district more transparent and responsive to parents who have long asked for answers to their concerns but then been met with only stony silence from the board.
Is it too much to ask the board to be responsive to the public?
And the board should also look into a long-needed attendance policy to make sure board members who fail to show up for month upon month be held accountable.
