Hamtramck City Hall was abruptly evacuated Friday afternoon after an elderly woman brought two World War II-era hand grenades into the police station.
The Detroit Police Department’s bomb squad was called to remove the grenades.
There were no injuries.
Hamtramck Police Chief Anne Moise said the woman found the grenades “in an old box in her basement, sounds like they had been there for quite some time.”
The woman will not face any criminal charges.
“It sounds like she was trying to do the right thing by bringing them in for disposal. However, I would like to remind people that these types of devices are very unstable and unpredictable,” Moise said.
“If someone does find a suspicious device including military type, please do not move it. Evacuate the location and contact the police dept from a safe distance so we can handle it appropriately and safely.”
