A Hamtramck institution is shutting its doors.
Mostek Paint and Glass Company, located on Jos. Campau and Casmere, is closing today, Friday, March 29.
For 93 years, the Mostek family has been serving the needs of the community. The company has been located here in Hamtramck for about 70 years, and prior to that operated out of a store on McNichols, also known as 6 Mile Rd.
Mostek employees have actually owned the company for the past few years, in a deal with the Mostek family when the family retired.
Store Manager Jim Henri said that, after working for 40 years, “I want to retire.”
At one time, Mostek was the to-go-to place for residents to purchase paint. But, in recent years, several hardware stores have opened in the city, and now offer paint for cheaper prices.
But one thing that the other stores can’t offer is years of expertise in the business.
Longtime customer Shannon Lowe came into the store to say his goodbyes to employees, and had one thing to say about the business closing down:
“Jeez, Louise.”
Henri said that one of the benefits of working at the shop was dealing with Hamtramck customers, who he said “were always very friendly.”

Not only paint but Mostek did a good business in glass replacement. The stores left in the city can’t tell the difference between a hammer and a screw driver and forget about getting advice for what type of paint to buy.

Fifty years ago, I can remember my grandfather taking me and my younger brother to Mostek to pick up gallons of white paint for him to give our home a “touch up” every spring.
