Breaking news … Hamtramck Public School Board still seeking new member

Want to serve on the Hamtramck Public School Board?
At Wednesday’s board meeting, a split board could not agree on whether to appoint one of two candidates to fill a seat vacated almost a month ago by former member Ramsey Hussain.
So, the board, after a long discussion, agreed to cast their net wider and ask for more candidates to apply.
But there is one catch: you have until this Thursday (Aug, 12), with a 2 p.m. deadline, to submit your application to be considered.
And then, on this Friday, Aug, 13, at 4 p.m., candidates will be interviewed.
The board is under pressure to fill the vacancy this week, when the 30-day deadline expires for it to appoint someone, or else the vacancy will be filled by a Wayne County intermediate school district – which is Wayne RESA.
If that body doesn’t fill the position within 30 days, then the state board of education takes over the appointment.
That prompted Boardmember Salah Hadwan to propose having the state make the appointment.
Board President Jihan Aiyash disagreed, saying that would be “irresponsible” of the board to let state officials make that decision.
“The state doesn’t have the perspective” of the community, Aiyash said. The state, she stressed, would make an appointment without “consideration of students and staff.”
Yes, it’s rushed and complicated, but to apply, email to board President Jihan Aiyash at jaiyash@hamtramckschools.org
