The brutal arctic cold is to blame for the cancellation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Pray Breakfast at Monday’s (Jan. 15) Hamtramck Public School’s Community Center.
Co-organizer Madelyn Porter said Hamtramck Public School District Superintendent Jaleelah Ahmed said the cold posed a serious health hazard for those coming, especially students who were going to participate in a talent show and were most likely walking to the center, located on Charest near Caniff.
The weather is, indeed, in the extreme cold range, and predictions for the temperature in the morning were expected to be below zero.
The annual event, in its 26th year, is sponsored by the Concerned Women of Hamtramck. Porter, who is a member of the group, said no decision has been made yet to either re-schedule or to cancel the event for the year.
She said that those who purchased tickets may ask for a refund, or they can hold on to their tickets until a decision is made whether to re-schedule.
Porter can be reached at (313) 573-0782.
