Evan Major

Hamtramck has a new district school board member, and he is familiar.
Former HPS Board President Evan Major was appointed this afternoon, Friday, Aug. 13, to fill a vacant seat on the board.
Newly-elected board member Ramsey Hussain abruptly resigned last month, just six months into his new six-year term.
This was the board’s second attempt to fill the vacancy. The board had met on Wednesday, but could not come to an agreement between two candidates.
To help the board reach a decision, the meeting was moderated by Dr. Rod Green, a former superintendent and a consultant for the Michigan Association of School Boards.
Major said he wanted to rejoin the board to help tackle a number of pending issues – especially, the return of in-classroom learning for students.
He also cited his previous experience on the board, and said the board would not have to wait for him to become familiar with issues and procedural rules – something other board members said that gave Major an edge over the other candidates.
Major thanked those other candidates for applying for the position, and said that he is now “looking forward to collaborating with community leaders.”
The appointment of Major will only last until the position is filled in the upcoming November General Election.
Major told The Review that, as of now, he does not plan to seek the position in the November election.

A decent decision – Evan’s experience is needed on the current board.
