The days are numbered for tossing flyers onto Hamtramck porches and yards.
The City Council took the first step to adopt a new law that will require whoever wishes to distribute flyers to pull a business license with the city, identify to the police department who will be distributing the material and what exactly will be distributed.
Those who pass out the flyers will be required to wear an ID. The material must be affixed to the house, not just thrown onto porches.
Newspapers and non-commercial material – including political literature — are exempt.
The public will be able to weigh in on the issue during a public hearing at the next City Council meeting, which is May 11 at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
City officials say they hope the law helps cut down on the amount of litter that comes from flyers being thrown onto porches, which inevitably end up on the streets.
