Citywide upgrades require sacrifices and time

Patience, folks.
The final phase of the repaving of Caniff will have to wait until spring.
We know the community has long complained about the potholes on Caniff in recent years, but fortunately, thanks to a federal grant, the city has been able to plan out repaving the entire length of the street in Hamtramck.
Because of cold weather, however, the final section (from Gallagher to Conant) won’t be repaved until next spring, when concrete can be poured in warm-enough weather.
During the repaving of Caniff from Jos. Campau to Gallagher, we heard a number of business owners and residents complain about the street being closed off to traffic.
Folks, you can’t have it both ways: wanting the city to do something about the condition of the roads, but then complaining about the inconvenience of repaving it.
For decades Caniff has existed as is. It’s not even known when the street was last paved.
Improvements to the city’s roads and water lines take time and money, and a great deal of patience for putting up with the inconveniences involved in making those improvements.
Next year, when the project is completed, we won’t remember what we all had to put up with, but we will enjoy driving and biking on a new, smooth road.
So, please – a little patience.
