Get ‘city smart’ during warm weather months

As we reported last week, warm weather always ushers in more street crime.
The reasons for this are various – and obvious. People are out more and, in the heat, folks get more irritable. Mix in booze, and things can quickly get out of hand.
Hamtramck has many charms, and one of them is the closeness of our houses to one another. This helps build bonds between neighbors, and fosters a general community identity.
You won’t find that in the suburbs.
But this closeness can also lead to short tempers.
The city also offers a chance for those inclined to stealing things to find a veritable smorgasbord of possible things to steal.
The bottom line here is, get smart about what you leave on your porches and in your yard. Make sure your garage is locked, and that you have a home security system.
If you find yourself getting angry at home, and are tempted to take it out on your wife, husband, partner, mate, or neighbor, go walk it off instead. Buy a punching bag for the basement. Take a few moments to breathe deeply.
It’s better than spending a night – or worse — in jail.
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
By all means, though, have fun this spring and summer. After a long winter, the warm months go by all too quickly.
