Hamtramck mourns the loss of a champion for all

Last week, Hamtramck lost a dedicated public servant.
Yvonne Myrick, a retired supervisor with the city’s water department, and the first African-American to be president of the Hamtramck Public School District Board of Education, passed away last week.
Myrick also founded the Concerned Women of Hamtramck, which mentored students, and was active in a number of civic functions.
She was a mighty voice for the disadvantaged, and a champion for the rights of minorities. Myrick was also a fierce supporter of all things Hamtramck.
We have witnessed her face down critics with dignity and poise.
Unfortunately, Hamtramck experiences its share of vicious political fights, but through it all, Myrick exhibited an inner strength that was truly inspiring.
We will miss her strong but gentle voice, but we rest easy knowing that she will continue to be a true role model for all.
May she rest in peace.
