In Our Opinion … In Hamtramck, hate has no home

These are certainly uncertain times in this country.
Here in Hamtramck, we are experiencing a deepening political divide between some members of the city council and the mayor.
Despite these developments, Hamtramck remains a city that does not welcome hate – no matter what’s happening in the world, or here at home.
As of this time, there appears to be a radical group of Christian nationalists who say they will be in town on Sunday to host a book burning in front of a mosque near Jos. Campau and Caniff.
We assume they mean to burn the Koran – the sacred text for millions of Muslims. Hamtramck is a majority-Muslim city.
We have no idea if this group will actually show up, or will actually try to burn a Koran.
But, if they do, residents here should be prepared for such people who want to stir up trouble, and invite assaults.
Don’t fall for it, folks.
This is precisely what those types of people who spew hate hope will happen.
What we prefer to have happen is that residents ignore these folks, denying them the attention they crave. Our police department is already coordinating with other agencies to deal with these radical nutjobs.
Stay strong, Hamtramck.
