Look for exciting things to happen soon

Things are moving forward for Hamtramck’s parks.
With a new executive director now in charge of the Hamtramck Parks Conservancy, we expect major excitement to be generated.
And we are confident that, with the chief presently in charge — Tom Habitz — that will come to fruition.
In a vote of confidence, the city council OK’d a transition that allows the conservancy to take over event scheduling at the Turkey Stearnes Field in the city’s newly renovated historic baseball stadium.
For the past few years, the Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium has handled event scheduling, and they did a fantastic job. There are baseball teams from all over playing at the renovated stadium, and people are having a blast being there.
It is truly a magical place to be, considering its storied historical significance to American baseball. The stadium was once home to the Detroit Stars in the 1930s.
The Stars, who had a standout player named Turkey Stearnes, were part of the-then Negro Baseball League – from back when African-Americans were not allowed to play in the all-white major leagues.
Jumping forward to today, the stadium site has the potential to be a major destination for, not only baseball fans, but also other types of events.
We can’t wait for spring to see what will be coming to this location.

Habitz has said that the goal is to transform 26 acres of park and recreation areas into becoming “the heart of the city.”
