In political circles, it’s known as bringing home the bacon.
In the case of state Rep. Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck), he brought home to Hamtramck a whole hog, so to speak.
And, by that, we mean $7.3 million of state funding he was able to carve out of the state’s $82 billion budget for needed infrastructure repairs here in town.
Here’s a breakdown of what he was able to fund this way, with the help of state Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit):
• $2 million for the enhancement of Veterans Park, to improve recreational facilities and make general infrastructure upgrades in the area
• $2 million for upgrades to the Hamtramck Public Services Department, to provide safer and more efficient public services.
• $1.5 million allocated for alley and sidewalk repairs throughout the city.
• $1 million for infrastructure improvements to Hamtramck Public Schools.
• $800,000 to purchase a new fire truck.
Plans for the $2 million heading to Veterans Park are already in motion, said Konrad Maziarz, who is a member of the Hamtramck Parks Conservancy.
“As you all know, the road and parking lots are awful at the park, and it’s hard to get a funder to help cover these costs, so we intend to redo the parking lots and road in the park,” Maziarz said.
“The plan also includes working with the city to redo the Goodson alley along the park, and remove that fence line, further opening the park to residents in the area.”
In a press release, Aiyash, who is the Majority Floor Leader, said the grants for Hamtramck are a game changer for the city.
“These investments represent a transformative commitment to Hamtramck’s future. I am proud to have worked with my colleague and partner, State Sen. Stephanie Chang, to secure these critical dollars for Hamtramck,” Aiyash said in a press release.
“They will directly improve our parks, schools, infrastructure, and emergency services, making our community safer, more resilient, and more vibrant.”
Aiyash, who is not seeking re-election, also gave a shout-out to Hamtramck City Councilmember Mohammed Alsomiri.
“I want to especially thank Councilman Mohammed Alsomiri, who came to Lansing several times to meet with Lansing leaders to advocate for Hamtramck’s needs,” Aiyash said, in his press release.
“His leadership and persistence were critical in securing these funds. This funding will make a real difference in our community, ensuring that our infrastructure is modernized and our public services are strengthened.”
Alsomiri, as well as Councilmember Mohammed Hassan, is running to unseat Wayne County Commissioner Martha Scott.

“Bringing home the bacon” to a majority-Muslim community?
Poor choice of words!
