As many have noticed, Caniff is now fully open for traffic going west and east.
The reconstruction and repaving of Caniff, from Jos. Campau to Conant, was cut short with the sudden return of cold weather, which prevents cement from being poured.
That means work will continue when warm weather returns, and the last leg of the repaving will pick up from Gallagher to Conant. That should take at least a couple of months, when traffic on the street will once again be blocked for that section.
But, once completed, it will mean the end of the reconstructing of Caniff, from the I-75 service drive all the way across town to Buffalo – a project that will have taken about four years to complete, at a cost of about $6 million.
During the construction, parking in the city parking lot at Caniff and McDougall will continue to be free, in order to help businesses to still service customers.
Hamtramck’s other main thoroughfare, Holbrook, was repaved from Lumpkin to Conant during 2018-19 through federal and state grant monies.
Conant was also repaved by Wayne County, in 2021. The county owns and maintains that road.
In the meantime, the city has also been pursuing an aggressive alley repaving program, with still more alleys slated to be repaved this coming spring.
