If you didn’t get this issue from a Hamtramck Goodfellow volunteer, listen up.
The Goodfellows really need your help, and by help we mean your money. On Friday (Dec. 4), the Goodfellows were on the streets selling this newspaper as part of their annual donation drive to raise at least $7,000 to give the needy a decent holiday meal.
This year, as in the past few years, is especially tough for the Goodfellows and low-income families. The economy has hurt a lot of folks and those of us lucky enough to still have jobs are hurting as well.
Tough times, indeed.
But there is one thing that makes Hamtramckans stand out from other communities: we are stubbornly tough and we know how to survive. Hamtramck folks also have a long history of helping their neighbors in times of need.
Your donation will go toward the issuing of food coupons worth at least $25. A family or individual who gets a coupon can redeem it at A & C Market – a Hamtramck business – where they can put together a proper holiday meal.
It may not amount to much but it’s at least a little something for folks. It’s also a gesture of hope and faith – hope that times will get better and faith in our fellow beings for their generosity.
If you can spare a donation, make out a check to the Hamtramck Goodfellows and mail it to the Hamtramck Treasurer’s Office, 3401 Evaline, Hamtramck, MI 48212.
Those who would like to submit an application to receive a coupon need to do so no later than Dec. 15. Applications are available at the Treasurer’s Office in City Hall, the Hamtramck Housing Administrative office on Dequindre and Commor and the Public School District office on Roosevelt St., next to Keyworth Stadium.
For more information, call the city Treasurer’s Office at (313) 876-7700, extension 2.
