The weather is warming up, and so are Hamtramck’s High School sports teams.
So far this season, the baseball team has played two games. Though they lost them both – Ferndale beat them 13-2 and Centerline bested them 11-7 – the team has shown a lot of promise and was looking for their first win at Highland Park on Thursday at the time this paper went to press.
“We’ve got excellent chemistry,” said Head Coach Carl Norin. “There are a lot of young guys who haven’t played much, but they’re committed and dedicated and have great sportsmanship.”
Norin added that he thought the team would finish with an even number of wins and losses on the season, but was optimistic that they might even do better. He said that Senior Omar Thabet was the team’s “true leader.”
The Cosmos’ next game is today (April 16) at home against Fitzgerald. Game time is at 4:30 at Playfair Field.
Elsewhere in the high school, the girls’ soccer team continues to shed blood, sweat and tears in their quest for victory. Head Coach Lauren Ealba says she is pleased with her team’s improvement and confident in their abilities.
“They’re starting to come together as a team,” she said.
After a brief recess during Spring Break, the girls were back in action Thursday afternoon against Unity Prep. The results of that game were also unavailable at press time, but Ealba anticipated a tough game coming from players on both sides.
“It should be a good match,” she said.
